Today we went outside and we had 10 shots each, this is a graph showing how many goals the people in my group got. As you can see, I got the most in because i'm so cool.

Pre reading - Look at the photographs above and answer the following questions.

What can you see? | A family getting their photo taken, the photos are taken at two different times. |
How are the photos similar or different? | In the first photo you can see that there are five children, in the second there are six, so one child has been born in between the time these photos were taken. In the first photo the men/boys are wearing dark colours and the women/girls are wearing white but in the second photo they are all wearing white except the mother. In the second photo the camera quality is much better than the firsts. In the first photo they are standing in a line and in the second photo there are two children in front of the rest. In both photos they aren’t smiling. And in both, the parents are sitting down and the children are standing. |
When do you think they were taken and why? | The first was taken in 1929 and the second was taken in 1932, I think these photos were taken to put up on their wall. |
How are these similar or different to any family photos you have seen or been in? | In my family photos we all smile unlike the family in these two photos. My family photos aren’t in black and white because we aren’t in the olden days. |

Comprehension strategy 3 – SUMMARISING The first two stanzas (verses) of this poem are entitled Aotearoa, 1929. Summarize what is happening in the first half of the poem. The author is explaining how you can tell by the colour of the photo, the clothes they are wearing and even the way they are standing that the photo is old, the date of the first photo, where it was taken, how old her dad is, what they are all wearing and how they are about to return to China. The next four stanzas (verses) of this poem are entitled Canton China 1932. Summarize what is happening in the second half of the poem?. The author is explaining when the photo is taken, how old her father is, what siblings he has, what they were all wearing, how they are about to return to New Zealand, how the had to pay £100 to New Zealand Government because the youngest wasn’t born in New Zealand, how they can’t leave the younger kids behind because they are too young but they will leave the eldest two behind, they will have to work hard to get money to send to them. |

Why would a writer use rhetorical questions? “Who knows what might happen on such a long sea journey?” and “How long will it take”, the writer would have probably used them to make the poem more interesting. |
