Today we went outside and we had 10 shots each, this is a graph showing how many goals the people in my group got. As you can see, I got the most in because i'm so cool.

Pre reading - Look at the photographs above and answer the following questions.

What can you see?	A family getting their photo taken, the photos are taken at two different times.
How are the photos similar or different?	In the first photo you can see that there are five children, in the second there are six, so one child has been born in between the time these photos were taken. In the first photo the men/boys are wearing dark colours and the women/girls are wearing white but in the second photo they are all wearing white except the mother. In the second photo the camera quality is much better than the firsts. In the first photo they are standing in a line and in the second photo there are two children in front of the rest. In both photos they aren’t smiling. And in both, the parents are sitting down and the children are standing.
When do you think they were taken and why?	The first was taken in 1929 and the second was taken in 1932, I think these photos were taken to put up on their wall.
How are these similar or different to any family photos you have seen or been in?	In my family photos we all smile unlike the family in these two photos. My family photos aren’t in black and white because we aren’t in the olden days.

Comprehension strategy 1 – INFERRING Based on what the author writes, what do you think is a poll tax? A policy.

Comprehension strategy 2 – VISUALISATION Draw or describe a ‘mandarin collar’ I think it’s a top that has a collar on it.

Comprehension strategy 3 – SUMMARISING  The first two stanzas (verses) of this poem are entitled Aotearoa, 1929.  Summarize what is happening in the first half of the poem. The author is explaining how you can tell by the colour of the photo, the clothes they are wearing and even the way they are standing that the photo is old, the date of the first photo, where it was taken, how old her dad is, what they are all wearing and how they are about to return to China.  The next four stanzas (verses) of this poem are entitled Canton China 1932.  Summarize what is happening in the second half of the poem?. The author is explaining when the photo is taken, how old her father is, what siblings he has, what they were all wearing, how they are about to return to New Zealand, how the had to pay £100 to New Zealand Government because the youngest wasn’t born in New Zealand, how they can’t leave the younger kids behind because they are too young but they will leave the eldest two behind, they will have to work hard to get money to send to them.

Comprehension strategy 4 – MAKING CONNECTIONS Personal connection. Relate this story to something that has happened to you or people you know in your own life; or what other book or film is it similar to. How is it the same, how is it different? I don’t have any connections.

Comprehension strategy 5 – REREADING FOR INFORMATION Where were these two photos taken. First one was in New Zealand and the second was in China. What are the children wearing in the first photo? The girls were wearing white dresses, long socks and shoes that looked like girls school shoes. The boys were wearing a shirt with a darker suit jacket, long socks and school shoes, the youngest boy appears to be wearing girls school shoes. What are they wearing in the second photo? The girls were wearing white flowy dresses down to their ankles and the boys were wearing flowy white pants and a flowy white long sleeve top with buttons down it. How did their family size change while they were in China? They had one baby boy. Which people in these photos were born in New Zealand? China? The youngest boy was born in China and the rest were born In NZ. Why did they have to pay £100 when they came back into the country? Because the youngest wasn’t born in China. Did all the family come back to New Zealand? Why/Why not? I think they left the oldest two boys behind but they couldn’t leave the younger ones by themselves.

Comprehension strategy 6 - DEVELOPING VOCABULARY   The author uses two rhetorical questions in this poem.  What are they?  Why would a writer use rhetorical questions? “Who knows what might happen on such a long sea journey?” and “How long will it take”, the writer would have probably used them to make the poem more interesting.
